Timez II
Joshua Avery, frequently described as “the big guy” and referred to as being
“twice the average man” has appropriately chosen the pseudonym Timez II.
Born in 1983 in rural Alabama, Josh lived with his parents and sister until his
parents divorced in 1989. This is when his life turned to what he now refers
to as “The Drama.” Both parents began living their own lives, developing new
relationships, which turned dark on both sides.
Living with Mom and a new stepfather turned into an emotional nightmare.
The verbal and emotional abuse turned physical for Timez II about a year
into the relationship. Mom was accused of wearing an “S” on her chest as
she ran interference and protected her children, but the abuse only worsened.
After living in a dysfunctional, abusive home for five years, Mom was strong
enough to break the chains and end the struggle.
At age 14, Timez II chose to move in with his father. Dad had girlfriends in
the past and a second failed marriage. Now there was a new stepmother and a
stepbrother the same age. From the outside looking in, everything appeared to
be great, but Step Mom #2 had a dark side of her own.
Abuse comes in many forms and some people hide their true character until
they’re behind closed doors. Dad was blind and didn’t take a stand. After 3
years of being demeaned and having his self-esteem destroyed, Timez II had
matured enough to realize he could choose his own path in life. A person’s
life is determined by their choices and the consequences thereof not by what
people tell you that you are.
Writing short stories and poems has always been natural for Timez II. During
middle school, some of his short stories were published in a local newspaper.
The two-year college he attended requested his permission and release for
his short stories and poetry to be published in state textbooks. One thing
that makes his works uniqueis his ability to draw from his emotions and life
experiences. He refers to his own writing as “keeping it real.” His mentor and
inspiration to become a rap artist is Tupac Shakur.
Timez II is a true performer. He’s always yearned for the spotlight and has
participated in every talent competition since grade school. It didn’t matter if he
was part of a group or performing solo. Nor did it matter, how small the part. He
had to be a part of the performance!
He began writing lyrics and rapping at the age of 15. While writing and performing
with friends in high school, he always had the aspiration of “making it.” Timez II
hooked up with Akryliq, another local artist, in 2001. Serious about their careers
in the music industry, they began reaching out in various avenues to gain exposure.
In 2002, Timez II and Akryliq drove from Alabama to New York to audition for
P. Diddy’s “Making The Band.” They left Alabama in a run down ‘91 Pontiac
LeMans, with $100 together and their will to succeed. After a straight 21 hour
drive to New York, they arrived tired. But not without their heartfelt desire to
be successful, only to be shot down because they were from Alabama;
the Dirty South.
Timez II has performed in A&R Seminars in Atlanta, Georgia. He gained the interest
of a Representative from Def Jam South during a chance meeting in an Atlanta mall.
Timez II approached the gentlemen, introduced himself, and asked if he would listen
to his demo. After listening to the demo, the Rep asked Timez II perform some of
his other songs. While Rapping in the mall, several Dudes passing by began rapping
with Timez II. The free style performance gained Timez II the opportunity to work
with the Def Jam Rep until the separation between that individual and the label.
Timez II has performed in a local clubs. He’s also competed to perform in the
Heritage Festival in Birmingham, Alabama. He was invited to perform a second time
because he “rocked the house”, as stated by the Program Manager. He performed
his own music and won second place.
During 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. This tragedy impacted the
lives of our families in the Dirty South. When asked to perform in the Celebrity Hip
Hop Katrina Benefit in Tampa, Florida at Club PRANA, Timez II didn’t hesitate. “He
Ripped It!” Performing one of his first singles, “Work That Rump”, Timez II and the
“Original Rump Shaker” turned that motha’ out!
Timez II works the crowd when he performs. It’s not unusual for him to get on the
dance floor while he’s performing. He gets the crowd into his music and he gets into
the crowd. His lyrics are real. He can come hard and he can make you move. This
diversity gives his fans a balanced rap mix that will prove longevity.
Dedicated to success, Timez II has completed his first CD with Artist and Producer,
Steve Perry, and under the advisement of Lee Parker, Brimstone Entertainment.
He loves to write and says, “Rap is an art of expression.” Ask Timez II if he’s ready,
and he’ll free style his answer. He’s always ready!
